Green Lancaster – Organic Garden and Chicken Project

The Organic Garden and Chicken enclosure form a core part of Green Lancaster volunteer activity at Lancaster University. In a quiet secluded corner of campus, there is a large fruit and vegetable garden with greenhouses, polytunnels and outdoor raised beds! Right next door is the 400m2 secure Chicken enclosure with 6 friendly, egg laying hens! There are over 40 students trained in looking after the chickens who sign up to a daily feeding rota and don their wellies and head down to see if there are any eggs to be collected! During term time, there are weekly group volunteer sessions at the Organic Garden, where the students meet up to plant seeds, maintain, and most importantly harvest all the vegetables that have been planted. We are teamed up with local organisation LESS (Local and Effective Sustainable Solutions) to deliver a series of training courses for the volunteers all about organic planting and cultivating on allotments or smallholdings.
